We have a simple 2 bedroom 2 bathroom Casa in Mexico that is minutes from WORLD CLASS beaches, golf, scuba-diving, pyramid ruins, snorkeling, shopping, eateries, cave diving, spelunking, kitesurfing, dolphin discovery, eco-parks, sailing......(read on).....
(((PICTURES at the bottom)))

THE HOUSE located in downtown Chemuyil, 0.5 Mile from ocean, 3miles south of Akumal (8 miles north of Tulum and/or 25miles south from Playa del Carmen)
GOOGLE EARTH coordinates: 20°20’55.05N x 87°21’07.83W
-800sqft (2 stories) sleeps 4-6
-overlooks town park in downtown Chemuyil (Calle Golondrina)
-2 bedroom, 2 bathroom.
-master bedroom with king-sized bed, jacuzzi in master bathroom
-guest room with 2 double beds (2 additional inflatable beds available) linens provided.
-fridge, stove, A/C, and handcrafted Mexican furniture
-we provide beach chairs, boogie boards, bicycles with trailer/carriers, cooler, and sunshade umbrella/tent.

TRANSPORTATION:
BICYCLE:
Chemuyil is less than 1 mile NW of an AMAZING secluded white sand beach called Xcacel. Xcacel Beach recently won an award for being a Top Ten beach in Mexico).
You will LOVE using the bikes for visits to Xcacel Beach 1 mile south, or to Bahia Principe Beach 1 mile north
TAXI:
Chemuyil always has a line of taxis but they may have "gringo" prices that would hinder using them affordably (it might cost as much as $10 to taxi 5km to Akumal)
I think that I would recommend renting a car- especially if you plan on making day trips around the yucatan.
BUS:
The Mexican government subsidizes their public transport system so bus prices are artificially low. Shuttle vans (collectivos) run every 5-10 minutes from about 7AM to 11PM up and down the North South highway that connects Tulum to Playa del Carmen to Cancun. Hold a hand in the air and flag one down. $1.50-$3 per person to go from Tulum to Playa Del Carmen or anywhere in between.
CAR RENTAL:
Truly, there is soooo much to do in the area, you will not regret the convenience and mobility of having your own wheels.

THINGS TO DO LOCALLY (distances measured in proximity from our house)
1. Bike (or drive) to Xcacel Beach (1.5km S) ($0.85 entry fee)
Use our house bicycles and trailer to transport a cooler of beer, some beach chairs and snorkel gear. Secluded white sand turtle sanctuary beach! There’s a live coral reef on the north side of the bay that is CRAZY with marine life! The south side is known locally as Boogie Beach (2-4 foot waves are about as big as the Carribean Sea gets). Xcacel also has a public access Cenote good for fresh water snorkeling and phenomenal water clarity.
kitesurfing, sunbathing, snorkeling, volleyball…..

2. Bike (or drive) to Bahia Principe (1.5km N) (free entry)
Bahia Principe Resort is mandated to provide free public access to their beautiful (but tourist infested) beaches. There are a few shops off the beach with PADI certified divers offering scuba tours out of Bahia Principe Coba. You could also rent sailboats, go parasailing, deep sea fishing etc. Sometimes it’s fun just to “people watch” all the tourists!

3. Freelance Scuba or fishing with my boat at Xcacel (1.5km S) (inquire if interested)
I have an inflatable 12 foot Zodiac boat with 3.3HP motor that is ideal for fishing, snorkeling and even scuba-diving trips- but you’d need a car to transport it.
Using my own scuba gear I have done over 50 spectacular dives with the zodiac;
(hee, hee, all for only $5 per tank and a few pesos of gas!!!)

4. Go out to eat at Pizza Leo’s (200 metres away)

5.The Xel-Ha marine eco park is 3km S. (Mexico’s eco-disneyland)
(look it up online)

6. Akumal (5km N) has a great snorkel lagoon (yal-ku) ($10.00)
Scuba Dive Shops, restaurants/bars (Buena Vida is cool)

7. Coba ruins (40km SW) biggest pyramid in the Yucatan (higher than Chichen Itza AND unlike Chichen Itza, they let tourists climb it).
You can rent Mtn Bikes at the Ruin entrance and cruise dirt path roads encompassing several hundred acres of jungle with ruins in different stages of excavation (some ruins are still completely covered in jungle)
About 5km passed Coba lie 2 phenomenal Cenotes ((with some strange Mayan name that I forget)) that consist of a hollowed out volcano that (over eons) has filled with fresh water. BRING MASK AND SNORKEL!!!

8. Tulum Ruins (12km S)
The views are breathtaking (but the ruins don’t measure up to Coba)

9. Tulum Beaches (14km S)
Pull into any beachside restaurant and buy a beer or eat a meal to gain access to some of Mexico’s most famous white sand beaches.

10. Playa Del Carmen (40km N)
Take a public transit bus (Collectivo) for ($1.50 to $3) and go to Playa’s famous 5th avenue shopping district

11. Cancun Wet N Wild (100km N)
Great highlight if you have young kids (I’m 35 and I still love it)
Sundays are Half Price- ALL INCLUSIVE BEER FOOD AND RIDE ACCESS for $20!!!

12. Scuba (or Snorkel) in Dos Ojos (3km S), Hidden Worlds (7km S), or Jardin D’Eden (10km N)
Dos Ojos (two Eyes), Hidden Worlds and Jardin D’Eden each boast 300feet of underwater visibility, deep caverns with staligmites and staligtites (sp?), and FISH THAT EVOLVED WITH NO EYES!!! In such water clarity it feels like you’re flying!!!
Nowhere in the WORLD will you find such an extraordinary ecosystem!!!
I’d suggest checking out all three (they’re all neat in their own ways). My wife and I have visited about 20 of them throughout the Yucatan and these are our 3 favourite!!!

13. Learn to Kitesurf at Xpu Ha beach (15km N)
If you like extreme sports, Xpu-HA beach has a kitesurfing shop with KPA certified instructors that offer lessons at a decent price.
(it’s a little hard to get there- look it up on YouTube for directions or ask a local)

14. Merida (200km W)
If you’re feeling adventurous and in the mood for some culture, brave a trip to Merida. Do some research before you drive into a city of this size (or buy a Lonely Planet Guidebook (they’re worth every penny)).
We have watched the National Cuban Ballet perform with The Yucatan Orchestra when we rented a hotel in the centro on just a random Saturday night!!!
Their arts museums, theatres, public squares and markets are world renowned!

SPANISH SPEAKING AND THINGS TO DO IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Spanish will come in handy in Chemuyil so brush up before you visit.
It is truly a Mexican pueblo. Many locals can speak some limited English, but don’t count on it!
(besides the ex-pats in the area, you won't hear much english).
GROCERIES: The grocery/beer store “SuperPool” is only 50 Metres away but you'll be asking for directions and buying products in Spanish (or using charades gestures!!!)
PIZZA LEO’S: is Chemuyil’s locally renowned Pizzeria and it is about 200Metres away.
FESTIVALS: The town itself frequently hosts festivities, soccer matches and markets that you simply will NEVER see in the tourist zones!!!
INTERNET: there are 2 internet cafes just down the street (100-200 Metres)
DVD RENTAL: with so much to do in the area, you shouldn’t be watching movies, but the internet café across from the town park rents dvds
(our house provides a DVD player)

ENGLISH WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF SPANISH-PRACTICING PATIENCE
A. There is a large expat community in Chan-Chemuyil (meaning, South Chemuyil in Mayan) about .5km south of our Chemuyil town. On google earth, Chan Chemuyil will show up as a big square of cookie cutter houses scrunched together.
On Google earth our house, (a little blurry on Google Earth), overlooks a tiny triangle shaped town park on the north east side of the main Chemuyil town (shaped like a pistol)
(I think you have to pay for Google Earth to upload your own photos- so I haven’t bothered to post our house yet).
When we were house shopping we would often visit the Canadian/American contingent (about 150 strong) in Chan Chemuyil. Happy hour beer, Jimmy Buffet songs, tips on buying property in Mexico and talk of Canadian winters is always an easy thing to do amongst that friendly bunch.
The Ex-pats of Chan-Chemuyil are regularly walking or bicycling to Chemuyil to frequent the restaurants, internet cafes, or tienda (grocery store). If you see a foreigner, you can bet they’re from “the Chan”.

B. Go visit the poor suckers paying $300-$400 a night at Bahia Principe 1mile north. There is a free public beach access that you can bike or drive to.

WHAT TO BRING WHEN YOU COME TO THE MAYAN RIVIERA
Bring a mask and snorkel or buy one after you arrive. Fins are good to have but not necessary.

Photos of our house are currently a bit limited- there were 11 (not kidding) renters living in it when we took the tour with the owner, when we viewed and consequently bought the house. I can send a few photos we took of the neighborhood but you’ll have to wait until we move in (in November) before we'll be able to show the interior.
(we’ll be doing $10,000 in renovations when we take possession in November- possibly adding a 3rd floor terrace)

We’re prepared to rent the house anytime starting December 2009
